This article details the differences in address requirements during Company Formation
Different Address Types
There are several address types that can be used during company formation, which have different requirements and considerations for use.
Registered Address
This is a mandatory requirement for forming a company:
- It must have a registered address available before registering the company
- That address will be public; use an address you are comfortable being public
- An agent can provide an alternative address to use for an additional cost
In addition, it should:
- Be a physical address in the UK
- Be in the same country your company is registered in; for example, a company registered in Scotland must have a registered office address in Scotland
The address must also be ‘appropriate’. This means that:
- A company representative will be made aware of any post addressed and delivered
- Post received by the company at this address can have delivery confirmed
Service Address
This is a correspondence address for the company. It:
- Is on the public register
- Can be a non-UK address
- Where you will receive communications about the company
- May be the same as the registered address but does not have to be
Residential Address
This is the current residential address of the members.
- You must tell Companies House your home address and ensure that it's kept up to date
- It will not be available on the public register for everyone to see unless you also use it as a Registered or Service address
- Your home address is kept on a private register
