Departments and Matter Types Overview
Departments and Matter Types within Insight defines the type of case being set up.

A Department is the generalised area of work, for example Conveyancing

The Matter type defines the specific area of work under the selected department, for example, Residential Sale, Residential Purchase
- You will need to select a department first and then a related matter when creating a new matter/
Setting up Departments
1.Select 'System' and then 'Settings' to open 'System Settings'
2.Scroll down to 'Departments', and click to select. Any Department that have already been created will be listed
3.Click the 'Add' icon in the top left of the toolbar
- Within the 'Details' section at the bottom of the screen, enter a 'Code' and 'Description'
- Select 'Save' from the top left toolbar
The Code will determine the Matter reference; for example, the first matter you generate will be CON1, the next CON2 etc.
Edit a Department
Click a "Department" to select and amend any details within the "Details" window or mark as deleted. If the Code is amended, it will not impact the reference of any existing matters. If a Department" is deleted, this will not affect current matters. However, the "Department will not be available to select when any new matter is created.
Select 'Save' to save any changes to the Department.
Setting up Matter Types
1. Select 'System' and then 'Settings' to open 'System Settings'
2.Scroll down to 'Matter Types' and click to select. Any Matter already created will be listed.
3.Click the 'Add' icon in the top left of the toolbar
- Within the 'Matter Type Details' section at the bottom of the screen, enter a unique code. This can be a mixture of letters and numbers
- Add a "Description for the Matter Type
- Select a "Department" to link the Matter Type to
- Enter any other details if required - Any additional information entered against the matter will pre-populate the relevant fields when a matter is created
- Select 'Save' from the top left toolbar
Please Keep in mind If you enter a value in 'Years Before Destroy Date', this will take precedence over any destroy date set against the Department. When a Matter is created, a default destroy date can only be overwritten by users with 'Change the Destroy Date' permission.
Step 4: Edit a Matter Type
- Click a Matter to select and amend any details within the "Details" window
- Select 'Save' from the top left toolbar
If a Matter Type is deleted, this will not impact existing matters; however, the Matter will not be available to select when any new Matter is created.
