What is a Subdomain?
A subdomain is a way to create a distinct section within a larger domain, often used to organize environments or deliver customized versions of a product.
In web applications, subdomains can function as separate instances of the main software - each one tailored for a specific client, team, or purpose.
Subdomains are commonly used in development workflows. For example, environments like staging.company.com or dev.company.com allow teams to test features and changes in isolation before releasing them to the live system.
Beyond development, subdomains are also used to personalize client experiences. They let you offer dedicated spaces like client1.company.com or client2.company.com, each with its own branding, data, and configuration.
This approach maintains a clean domain structure while ensuring each client gets a secure and customized version of the platform.
In the context of Brighter Law Suite (BLS) and Brighter Estimates (BE), subdomains help separate and personalize each client’s instance. While the core platform remains the same, each client accesses it through their own branded subdomain, providing a tailored experience that aligns with their identity and operational needs.
Creating a Domain in Core
To create a domain name in Core:
1. Click the dropdown in the top left-hand corner of the screen.
2. Select the Admin tab.
3. Open the Domains tab.
4. Here, you’ll see a list of existing subdomains and an option to Add Subdomain.
The following fields are required to create a subdomain:
Livepath - Enter the company name in all lowercase letters, with no spaces.
For example,turnerandturner.
Stagingpath - This field is automatically populated based on the Livepath entry, using the company name followed by _staging.
If you're creating a subdomain for Brighter Estimates (BE), you must manually append -online after _staging.
Example: turnerandturner_staging-online (for BE)
Application - Select the system for which the domain name is being created. Choose Nimbus for Brighter Law Suite (BLS) or Cirrus for Brighter Estimates (BE) and click Create.
